Chapter 8: Sunday

Dear Diary,

I am writing this last entry in another body, and unfortunately it’s not permanent. Therefore let me tell you what happened this evening. I’ll be as quick as I can, as I’m not sure how long I’ve got.

Tonight I met my first and last vampire master. I could tell immediately that he was no usual vamp; his eyes were hollow sockets in a gaunt skull-like face. His bumps spread right up into his hairline making him one ugly bloodsucker, and his fangs were twice the length of any vampire I’ve seen to date.

I got it straight away—he was the reason all the vampires have been finding me. He was testing me to see if I was worthy of becoming a vampire. I guess I passed the test as when he stepped from the shadows he put me straight into a trance. I just stood there in a daze, unable to move my hands to access my weapons. Unable to even blink.

He moved closer slowly, and the nearer he became the more scared I got. The air around him reeked of death and I wanted to vomit, only the trance even stopped the contractions of my stomach that would lead to retching.

I couldn’t do anything to stop him taking me in his arms and sinking those horrid fangs into my throat. As they pierced my skin I knew that was the end—either I was to become a vampire or I was going to die. It was immediately clear which of the two I would prefer. There was no-way on Earth that I wanted to become a vampire and undo all the work I’ve done trying to make a dent in their numbers, trying to save lives. Tears seeped out down my cheeks and suddenly the trance was broken. I screwed up my eyes, and in one swift movement pulled free my longest, sharpest stake, and rammed it through the vampire masters heart. Then I rammed it through my own.

We both fell onto the grass by a large tomb in the shape of a cross. I opened my eyes to take one last look at the night sky, but instead of stars I saw something infinitely more beautiful. Gabriele.

He took me home and allowed me these last few moments to finish my journal.

He is waiting for me now, only this time there is something different about him—he has enormous black feathered wings. They are sleek like those of a raven, and glimmer with an ethereal beauty. Gabriele is extending his hand, and behind him is a shining white passage leading up into the sky.

I hope he will kiss me, one last time, before I find out what’s beyond that light. . . .
